About the Photographer

Mark Weiss

Mark “WEISSGUY” Weiss, widely known as “The Guy Who Rocked the ’80s”, began his photographic journey in Matawan, New Jersey at age 13 after trading summer lawn mowing for a 35mm camera, then spent his teens sneaking into concerts at Madison Square Garden and beyond, photographing bands like Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and Peter Frampton and selling prints out of his high school locker. After being arrested for selling photos outside a KISS concert in 1977, Weiss walked into Circus magazine the next day with his portfolio and soon landed his first published image, a Steven Tyler centerfold, leading to his role as staff photographer.

Throughout the 1980s, Weiss traveled the world with bands, earning unprecedented access through close friendships and capturing iconic images of Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne, Mötley Crüe, Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Bon Jovi, KISS, and many others who defined the era, with his work appearing on landmark album covers including Slippery When Wet and Stay Hungry. In 2020, Weiss released his best-selling book The Decade That Rocked, published in four languages and praised by Rolling Stone, Spin, and The Washington Post, with accompanying museum exhibitions celebrating his unparalleled documentation of rock’s most explosive decade.
