About the Photographer
Chris Stein
Chris Stein is the co-founder, songwriter, and guitarist of the iconic punk band Blondie, and an acclaimed photographer whose work captures the raw energy and cultural vibrancy of 1970s New York City. Beginning photography in 1968 while at the School of Visual Arts, Stein immersed himself in the downtown rock scene, documenting musicians, artists, and the urban environment with an insider’s perspective. After co-founding Blondie with Debbie Harry in 1973, he continued photographing the band and the wider punk and new wave milieu, creating iconic images of figures like Debbie Harry, Iggy Pop, Andy Warhol, and William Burroughs. His photographs, collected in the books Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk and Point of View, as well as featured in exhibitions worldwide, offer both a personal chronicle and a historical record of a defining era in music and New York City culture.
