About the Photographer

Herman Leonard

Herman Leonard was a legendary American photographer whose iconic images defined the visual language of jazz in the mid-20th century. Born in 1923, Leonard came of age alongside the golden era of jazz, capturing intimate, smoke-filled portraits of legends including Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, and Frank Sinatra. Working primarily in New York during the 1940s and ’50s, Leonard’s photographs are celebrated for their dramatic lighting, emotional immediacy, and deep sense of atmosphere, revealing both the power and vulnerability of his subjects on and off stage. Though his work was largely unseen for decades after he shifted his career toward commercial photography, Leonard’s rediscovery in the 1980s cemented his legacy as one of the most important photographers in jazz history, with his images now held in major museum collections and continuing to shape how the world remembers the sound, style, and soul of jazz.
