About the Photographer
Dustin Pittman
Dustin Pittman arrived in New York in the late 1960s and has spent decades documenting the city’s cultural, social, and creative life. Working at the intersection of fashion, music, art, and nightlife, Pittman captures the people, movements, and moments that have shaped New York’s history. His work reflects a deep engagement with the communities he photographs, exploring themes of identity, visibility, freedom of expression, and cultural resistance.
Moving fluidly between underground scenes and elite social circles, Pittman’s photography is defined by intimacy, authenticity, and human connection. His approach is rooted in personal relationships built on trust and mutual respect, allowing him to photograph his subjects not as outsiders looking in, but as participants sharing in the culture itself. The result is an enduring archive of New York life, captured with an instinctive understanding of the people and connections that define it.
Pittman’s photographs have appeared in leading publications including Life, Vogue, Vanity Fair, The New York Times Style Magazine, and W Magazine. His work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including the Brooklyn Museum and the Andy Warhol Museum. His Rizzoli monograph, Dustin Pittman: New York After Dark, celebrates decades documenting—and participating in—the cultural life of New York City.
